How Can We Get Free Information That Actually Helps

You may have heard that the internet is like a library, but in fact, it is better! The internet’s information can be found for free without taking books out of their shelf. There are five simple ways to access free online information today:

1) Google or Bing

Here, you type in some keywords, and voila! You get millions of articles containing your keywords. It’s as easy as turning on a television set. In this way, you search through many websites with just one click. Also, typing several keywords in Google can get more article results than searching just one word/phrase. While choosing any website when using Google or Bing as a search engine, always check the URL (web address) carefully to ensure it is from a reliable and trustworthy site. Some of the links may lead you to websites that are not that reliable, so always watch out for those that have Sammy or adult ads on them. This way, you can avoid such sites.

2) Way back Machine

Way back Machine is an internet archiving website that allows us to search through old web pages (just like Google). Way back machine will enable you to see what websites looked like in the past through a timeline style feature. It does this by taking snapshots of websites every few weeks or months and allowing users to look at these cached and stored pages.

Way back machine sometimes even helps to find things that somebody may have deleted off their websites because used web crawlers and Way back machines automatically try to save all of the pages they can. Way back Machine can be handy because you can see the original page without any modification or updates. Way back Machine also helps you know what a website looked like ten years ago or even longer by taking snapshots from when the web was first invented in 1991 (the year Tim Berners-Lee made the world wide web).

3) Google Scholar

Google scholar provides us with scholarly articles, studies, citations, etc. Here we type search phrases into a box, and then google scholar finds many websites containing our keywords and collects these results for us on one page. When searching for academic information using google scholar instead of regular google, always check with your professor that the website you get is credible and trustworthy.

4) Who Is Domain

If you want to find information about a particular site, the first thing is to go to Way back Machine and then click on your Way Back timeline and select the date when the area was first created or registered. After this, visit WhoIsDomain .com and type in all of the available information (in this case, it will be the domain name). Choose the who is .com domain as a top-level domain from the drop-down menu.

Now enter the domain name online in the search field. Next, click on the “search” button to get details about this particular web resource. For example, you can find out when the domain has been registered and by whom. The same method also works at Domain Tools .com. The same company owns Way back Machine and Domain Tools, so you get the same results when searching for domain information.

5) Google Alert

Here, we can use Google alerts to find specific information in our category of interest, like articles about health, economy, education, etc. To do this, go to the Google alerts website and fill in the search terms that you want to be notified of. For example, if I wish to any article containing the “English” word published on blogs during the next two days or at least one week, I will put the following key terms into a box: English OR Grammar AND Blogs inurl: blog. Now click on Get Started Button.

Then you see an alert box message where it says, “You can add many other search terms, like web addresses or even photos.” So add some more keywords to your alert box, like websites and so on. Once you have added most of the essential keywords, click on the Get Notifications button. Then enter your email address and click on create Alert button. Now it will take you to a page that says, “You are ready to get alerts about what’s happening” here, Don’t forget to check all boxes. You can view all already created alerts by clicking View All Alerts link in the left-hand side menu bar below the Search Google for Results field.
